My reason for Organic Gardening and Lawn Care

Mi Hijo This is a photo of my reason for choosing organic products in our garden and lawn. My son. When he was little, he'd wander through the yard, looking for every sort of thing to taste. And when late summer one year, he discovered the orange-red tomatoes growing RIGHT THERE just for him, there was no stopping him. As soon as they were the least bit red, he was there, one tomato in each hand, stuffing them as fast as he could into his little mouth.

Is there a better reason to go green?

Choose Organic
For our Children and our Children's Children

Children are the most vunerable to chemicals & pesticides because of their less developed immune & detoxification systems, lower body weight, the fact that they are still growing & developing, & even their proximity to the ground.

So what is the danger?

Chemicals & pesticides have been linked to infertility, birth defects & childhood & adult cancers.(See the full study)
Pesticide exposure can have an affect on a child's neurological, respiratory, immune, and endocrine systems,
even at low levels. According to a study commissioned by the Environmental Working Group, an average of 200 different industrial chemicals, pollutants and pesticides were found in the umbilical cord blood of newborns (More information)

Can you do anything to reduce your child's exposure?

Use Organic food alternatives

One study, done by the University of Washington, found that children fed mostly organic produce and juice had only one-sixth the level of organophosphate pesticide byproducts in their urine compared to children who ate conventionally grown foods.

Studies have shown that organically grown food have more cancer fighting chemicals.

The USDA now has stricter guidelines to determine whether a food labeled "organic" is organic. You can also grow your own & know for sure.

As depleted soils, pesticides and refining processes can lower nutrient content in fresh fruits and vegetables look for natural supplements to detoxify & replenish a healthy system.

Use natural alternatives to pesticides

Garlic planted near roses will deter Japanese beetles.
Parsley, Basil, & marigolds are other common insect repellent plants.
Aphids like nastrutiums and leave your other plants alone if some are available.

Attract beneficial insects to your gardens using plants

Ladybugs, earthworms, ground beetles, parasitic wasps, lacewings & others will feast on insects considered "pests".

Growing daisies, chamomile, spearmint, peppermint, and catnip plants with your vegetables is a good way to brighten your garden & lure beneficial insects your way.

Encourage Bats & Birds to take up residence

A single bat can eat up to 1000 insects a night. Provide nesting areas for both bats & birds to help keep your insect population managable.

Organic lawn care

It's actually easier than you think!
Here are some tips to go green with your lawn care.

1. Do not use the grass catcher on your mower & leave grass cuttings on the ground.
They hold moisture & reduce the need for watering.

2. Leave the leaves. Spread the leaves in thin layers over your yard instead of bagging them up.

3. Compost. Start by collecting your organic waste in a pile or bin, then leave it be.
Rain, insects & the natural process of decomposition will do the rest.

4. Mulch trees, shrubs & plants with wood chips, grass clippings or composting material or newspaper.
Mulching is a natural recycling system.
The eco-system has a pattern, as organic materials fall to the ground, organisms in the soil begin the decomposition process, molds, bacteria, & insects process the material and good rich topsoil is eventually created.

5. Collect rain water in a rain barrel placed under your gutters. Use it to water your garden during local mandatory water restrictions. Be sure to keep the barrel covered after the rain stops to slow evaporation & prevent mosquitoes from breeding there.

6. Add crushed eggshells to your soil to aerate it. Coffee grounds can help reduce the acidity of soil.
