Organic Holiday Tips

plant

With the holidays coming up, perhaps it is not remiss to think about how to make them more earth-friendly.
Here are a few suggestions that are more eco-sensitive without losing any of the joy of giving or holiday spirit.

Decorating

Purchase a live tree with roots & plant it after the holidays

Bring a native plant as a gift to the host’s house as a thank you gift.
Indoor plants help keep the indoor air cleaner & are eye pleasing as well.

Decorate with plants rather than tinsel.
Holly, Mistletoe, fir sprigs, pine cones & poinsettias make nice natural & biodegradable decorations.

Use beeswax candles

Container gardens are lovely decorative ideas & can be made in all sorts of shapes & sizes.

Cards

Send online Christmas greetings.

Send cards made with recycled paper.

Recycle last year’s cards.
Send the card Uncle Joe & family sent to you back with your own warm wishes for this year’s holiday cheer.
Add the year and see how long you can keep the same card in circulation.

Shopping & Gift Giving

Shop goodwill first.
Find that unique gift,
the delicate tea cup in a design your Aunt Marge fancies,
a Ronald McDonald doll from your brother’s childhood and more.

Check out your local farmer’s market for unusual & eco-friendly locally made gifts.

Take your own cloth bag shopping.

Give organic lotions, bath items, clothing, coffee & more to make it a green Christmas

Give hand made items.
If you make the best organic spaghetti sauce in the entire western hemisphere,
give a jar. Put a recycled card tag on it, wrap it in a cloth bag and voila!

Use cloth gift bags, the Sunday funnies, old sheet music,
pillowcases, scarves, dishcloths or magazines for interesting & earth friendly wrappings.

Use popcorn instead of Styrofoam peanuts--then suggest the recipient feed the birds with the packaging material.

Fruit cake out---organic fruit basket in

Give Cousin Bobbie a membership to a conservation organization.

Give a gift to your children & your children's children. Plant a tree.

Give your child a birding kit rather than video game this year.

Dining

Use cloth napkins at holiday dinners to dress up your table & save a tree

Donate leftovers to your local food bank

Compost your dinner scraps
